Spiky Clay Mug - Natural

Our spiky clay mug is inspired by geometric, Mexican motifs. The ridges are designed to be functional, acting as a type of handle, making the clay cups easy to hold in your hand (while also looking beautiful on the shelf). Suitable for hot and cold beverages, starting with morning coffee and ending with a frosty cerveza.

Each clay mug is individually thrown on a potters wheel and burnished but not glazed, resulting in a smooth, almost waxy feel and a hefty weight. The shade of beige is the natural color of the clay; no pigments, dyes or glazes are applied. When wet (including after being washed), the clay will absorb liquid and will darken in color; it will return to its original hue when completely dry.

These special mugs are crafted by a group of artisans in a remote town in the state of Puebla, located in central México. Once a seabed, the soil in this region is now rich with clay which spawned a culture of pottery production that has been honed over decades. The clay is sourced locally and worked until it is ready to be shaped into objects such as bowls, vases, plates and mugs. Each mug is finished with a clay slip and burnished prior to being fired in large stone outdoor ovens.

Expect slight variations in size, shape, texture and color. Every piece is made by hand, and will feature the unique attributes to be expected from individually handcrafted items.

  • Capacity: 18 fl. oz. (2.25 cups)
  • Materials: Clay from Puebla, México (unglazed, lead-free)
  • Size: 3.5" D x 4.5" H
  • Care: Dishwasher and microwave safe. The clay may absorb moisture and appear darker in color right after washing; it takes ~24 hours to fully dry, and the mug's color will return to its lighter hue.
