Large stemless mug with matching plate featuring a contemporary style of red clay (barro rojo), handcrafted by a cooperative of women in San Marcos, Tlapazola, Oaxaca in southern México. Every piece is shaped by hand, and finished with a red clay slip which creates a uniquely textural finish.
We love these stemless mugs for a cafe au lait in the morning (what is better than wrapping both hands around an extra large latte?). They also double as bowls, great for soup, yogurt or oatmeal ... Each mug holds a generous 16 fl. oz. Beautiful yet durable for everyday use, these mugs are dishwasher and oven safe.
The women-led cooperative, known worldwide as Mujeres del Barro Rojo (women of the red clay), was founded by Macrina Mateo Martinez. As a teenager, Macrina traveled outside her village (which, as a woman, was frowned upon at the time) to find a wider audience and reach new markets, and obtain inspiration to expand upon the traditional designs of previous generations. Her knowledge and experience helped the village and the cooperative thrive, and most certainly kept alive the generations-old tradition of making red clay pottery that continues today.
Visiting and working directly with the artisans who design and create these beautiful pieces, and dedicate their lives to the craft, is a true privilege and pleasure.
