Small plate featuring a contemporary style of red clay (barro rojo), handcrafted by a cooperative of women in San Marcos, Tlapazola, Oaxaca in southern México. Every plate is shaped by hand, and finished with a clay slip which creates a uniquely textural finish.

You'll love these small, 6.5" red clay plates for accompanying a cheese platter, for small meals or dessert. Beautiful yet durable for everyday use, they are dishwasher and oven safe.

The women-led cooperative, known worldwide as Mujeres del Barro Rojo (women of the red clay), was founded by Macrina Mateo Martinez. As a teenager, Macrina traveled outside her village (which, as a woman, was frowned upon at the time) to find a wider audience and reach new markets, and gain inspiration to build upon the traditional designs of previous generations. Her knowledge and experience helped the village and the cooperative thrive, and most certainly kept alive the generations-old tradition of making red pottery that continues today.

Visiting and working directly with the artisans who design and create these beautiful pieces, and who dedicate their lives to the craft, is a true privilege and pleasure.
