Oaxaca Red Clay Nested Serving Bowls

$55.00 Regular price

A set of nested serving bowls featuring a contemporary style of red clay (barro rojo), handcrafted by a cooperative of women in San Marcos, Tlapazola, Oaxaca in southern México. Every bowl is shaped by hand, and finished with a red clay slip which creates a uniquely textural finish.

You'll find nested serving bowls useful for everything - pasta, salad, grain bowls and more. They are even oven safe! Buy individually or bundle and save with a nested set. Beautiful yet durable for everyday use. We love the contemporary, clean lines of the design combined with rustic clay construction.

The women-led cooperative, known worldwide as Mujeres del Barro Rojo (women of the red clay), was founded by Macrina Mateo Martinez. As a teenager, Macrina traveled outside her village (which, as a woman, was frowned upon at the time) to find a wider audience and reach new markets, and obtain inspiration to expand upon the traditional designs of previous generations. Her knowledge and experience helped the village and the cooperative thrive, and most certainly kept alive the generations-old tradition of making red clay pottery that continues today.

Visiting and working directly with the artisans who design and create these beautiful pieces, and dedicate their lives to the craft, is a true privilege and pleasure.
