It's been 30 years since we started making pottery here. It started with my grandparents. And now, I teach my children. I teach them to continue the craft for the next generation. I teach them so the flame doesn't burn out ...

MATA ORTIZ POTTERY: ONE OF MEXICO'S FINEST CERAMICS

Approximately 100 miles south of the US – Mexico border, in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, lies a small town known as Mata Ortiz. Here, there are roughly 300 families whose sole livelihood is making pottery. Over the decades, each potter has refined their personal style and technique and today, Mata Ortiz pottery is renowned throughout the world for it's quality and attention to detail.

FOUR GENERATIONS OF POTTERY MAKING

Lucio, who was taught by his grandparents, has made pottery his whole life. He is resourceful in his use of tools to create textural patterns, and can determine if the pottery is properly fired by simply tapping the bottom of the piece. Lucio continues the tradition by teaching his children (our Lucio mugs are made by his daughter).

INNOVATION IS THE TRADITION

The Mata Ortiz style of ceramics is a re-creation of the ancient pottery found at the nearby UNESCO archeological site Paquimé. Today's Mata Ortiz pottery blends traditional methods with original motifs, intricate designs, and geometric patterns.
