A striking, shimmery and minimalist ceramic vase handcrafted in the town of Mata Ortiz, in a remote region of northern México. Featuring a hand-burnished and shiny exterior, each vase is a true statement piece that demonstrates the high level of skill and artistry characteristic of Mata Ortiz pottery. Style with dry stems or all on its own.

Mata Ortiz pottery, named after the town of Mata Ortiz in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, represents some of the finest and most refined pottery styles in all of México. The region, rich with clay, has been fertile ground for pottery-making since the pre-hispanic era. In the 1970's, Juan Quezada (considered the "father" of modern-day Mata Ortiz pottery styles), reignited the pottery tradition in this town by experimenting with new techniques and types of local clay, resulting in a contemporary style of ceramics production. Today, hundreds of artisans throughout the region have built upon Quezada's work by honing and perfecting their own unique aesthetic.

All pieces are made from locally sourced clay, shaped by hand, etched and burnished, and fired in the ground to finish.

Mata Ortiz Pottery

Approximately 100 miles south of the US – Mexico border, in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, lies a small town known as Mata Ortiz. Here, there are roughly 300 families whose sole livelihood is making pottery. The Mata Ortiz style of ceramics is a re-creation of the ancient pottery found at the nearby UNESCO archeological site Paquimé, updated with contemporary designs. Today's Mata Ortiz pottery blends traditional methods with original motifs, intricate designs, and geometric patterns.

We collaborate with Lucio and his family to bring you beautiful pottery from this town. Read more about his story below.
