Shiny copper comal hammered by hand. A comal is a flat cooking tool commonly used throughout México to cook a variety of dishes, and is often made of clay or cast-iron. Use our copper comal to heat tortillas, melt quesadillas, or toast spices. It also functions as a beautiful serving platter, excellent for a cheese or charcuterie plate, desserts, and much more.
Copper is an excellent heat conductor, making it great to cook with. However, our copper comal is unlined, and we therefore do not recommend cooking (or serving) with acidic foods (such as fruits, vinegar, wine, etc.) which will react with the copper surface.
We work with a collaborative of artisans in Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacán who produce these beautiful pieces using recycled copper. All pieces are made individually by hand in small batches.
A versatile piece as beautiful as it is useful. Heat tortillas, melt quesadillas, or toast spices. It also functions as a beautiful serving platter, excellent for a cheese or charcuterie plate, desserts, and much more.
Copper will not rust, but it will naturally tarnish or patina over time and/or with exposure to moisture. If you dry your piece thoroughly after each use, this will prevent tarnishing. If needed, your piece can be polished to a gleaming finish with a copper cleaning product such as Brasso, Tarn-x or lemon + salt. It takes only a few minutes to polish.
Do not put copper in the dishwasher, and never use steel wool or abrasive sponges or scrubbers to clean it, as they can scratch copper’s surface. Clean gently with a smooth sponge or cloth. Dry immediately. Any moisture left on copper will increase the rate at which it tarnishes, so be sure to dry it thoroughly.
