Our small black clay (barro negro) square plate is handmade in the state of Oaxaca in southern México. Perfect for holding citrus slices and tasting salts to accompany mezcal. Use for serving appetizers and small desserts, or as a decorative tray to catch sunnies, jewelry, and more.
A style of black clay pottery unique to Oaxaca, barro negro is distinguished by its color and finish. It's origins date back centuries and the color is derived not from dye or glaze but from the use of special, locally-sourced clay (free of chemicals, lead and/or glaze). Every piece is burnished prior to firing, which results in the sultry sheen. All clay is locally sourced from the hills of the region and the pieces are shaped by hand, without the use of a pottery wheel.
