A set of 2 adorable black clay mezcal copitas ("little cups" in Spanish) featuring a whimsical face, individually handmade in Oaxaca, a region of southern México. This design feature (with the face) is common throughout Oaxaca, and has been traced to the Monte Albán time period (the ancient Zapotec metropolis). Use these copitas for sipping mezcal or tequila; the wide mouth will help the spirit open up, releasing aromas and enhancing the tasting experience. You'll be transported to Oaxaca when sipping from these earthy little vessels.
Make it a set, and pair with our black clay small plate (for holding salts / citrus slices) and black clay mezcal vessel.
A style of black clay pottery unique to Oaxaca, barro negro is distinguished by its color and finish. It's origins date back centuries and the color is derived not from dye or glaze but from the use of special, locally-sourced clay (free of chemicals, lead and/or glaze). Every piece is burnished prior to firing, which results in the sultry sheen. All clay is locally sourced from the hills of the region and the pieces are shaped by hand, without the use of a pottery wheel.
Our pieces are produced in San Bartolo Coyotepec, a community in the state of Oaxaca.
