Small clay storage jar with a lid suitable for storing coffee, tea, sugar, dried spices, etc. Individually handcrafted in the Pai Pai community of Baja, México.

Made by Daria Mariscal in a remote town of northern Baja. Daria harvests and processes local clay, and shapes each jar and lid by hand before burnishing, sun drying, and ground firing to finish. The ground firing process creates unique black markings on each piece. This pottery technique has been practiced by generations of Pai Pai members, an indigenous community in Baja pre-dating the Spanish settlement with currently less than 200 people. Daria speaks Pai Pai and Spanish.

Due to their handmade nature, each jar will vary slightly in size, shape, and appearance. We believe the variation in handmade pieces is what makes them so special, and we hope you agree.

  • Handcrafted in Baja, México
  • Materials: Locally sourced clay
  • Size: 4" H x 4" D (each piece may vary slightly in size and appearance)
  • Care: If cleaning is needed, rinse with water and allow to air dry on a clean towel.

Pai Pai Pottery

Several hours south of the US - Mexico border, in a remote part of the mountainous, high-desert region of Baja California, is a tiny town home to the indigenous Pai Pai community (a group of less than 200), where pottery-making has been a way of life for more than 500 years.

The pottery is ground-fired using dried yucca wood as fuel. The firing process gives the pottery its distinctive reddish-brown hue with a unique, marbled appearance.

Daria, one of the community leaders, was taught to make pottery by her parents and grandparents. Pottery has a significant cultural and spiritual significance for the people of the Pai Pai community.
